Unit 3 – Test – Key

Silvia (intermedio 2 lunes) has requested the answers to the test in Unit 3, so here we go:

Page 50:

a: 1. The accident happened when the road was being repaired (passive, past continuous)
2. The murderer will probably never be found (passive, will-future for a prediction, with “probably” added to indicate we think it’ll actually happen!)
3. The burglar is thought to be a teenager (passive, present simple)
4. It is said (that) crime doesn’t pay (passive, “People say” type, impersonal)
5. He probably won’t come (active, Will-future for a prediction). / He’ll probably not come (also possible) – Notice He won’t come can also mean, He refuses to come! 😀 Here there is no ambiguity thanks to “probably”.

b I’ll underline the clues:
1. This time tomorrow we will be lying on the beach (future continuous). Notice: on the beach
2. The match starts at 7By the time I get home, it will have already started / it will already have started (yes, both!) (future perfect)
3. You mustn’t use your mobile phone until the plane has landed (also, “lands”)
4. Many people have problems sleeping if they drink / have drunk coffee.
5. I want to spend a year travelling when I finish / have finished university.

Vocabulary
a: kidnapper (crime against people, not against property), smuggler (person, not crime), evidence (objects or events, not person), scorching (hot, instead of cold), mist (not an extreme weather event).
